Seminar Series
Speaker: Dr. Paul LaPenna
Topic: Neuroscience and the Soul: Is Belief in the Soul Rational?
This month our topic is Neuroscience and the Soul: Is Belief in the Soul Rational?
We are honored to have Neurologist Dr. Paul Lapenna with us to help us think about this issue from a medical/scientific perspective.
Holy Scripture and Christian tradition claim human beings have a soul; however, most neuroscientists claim belief in the soul is obsolete. It is said that human attributes once ascribed to the soul can now be ascribed to the brain, making belief in the soul superfluous.
In this talk, we examine the case against the existence of the soul and proceed to demonstrate the falsity of the claims made by neuroscientists. We then proceed to establish solid ground for belief in the soul through the works of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. Last, we underscore the importance of the human soul in relation to God.
